Taking on a renovation project is an incredibly rewarding challenge, especially if it is for your own home. You can spend months planning and years saving to create your dream home. Mistakes, however, can be costly both financially and for the timing of your project.

Here are some tips to help you avoid some costly renovation mistakes.

Budget and plan properly

Before you can hire any contractors or get materials to start work, you will need to have a plan and a budget. By having both of these, you will be able to keep the project on track and not lose track of your finances along the way.

Take some time to work out exactly what you want to change. Remember to factor in decorating and furnishing if it is needed.  Make sure you have a contingency fund  as well in case you come across any serious structural issues that you weren’t aware of.

Think about your needs

The most luxurious and beautiful homes can be ruined by a mismatch between the design and the functionality of the space.

One key example of this is a lack of planned storage space. Clutter can really affect the mood of a room, so having adequate places to store your belongings will help. If your bedroom is an area where clutter appears, try including fitted wardrobes in your renovation plans. Not only will you be able to store everything you need, but they will prevent any wasted space from occurring.

Look at your light levels

Professional renovators will know that lighting can make or break a home design. Natural light is something that homebuyers will look at if you do come to sell in the future.

If you are planning a huge structural overhaul, you may be able to add in some windows or skylights to brighten a room. This will be more expensive so be sure to factor it into your budget.

Adding windows is not always possible, especially for smaller projects. Here, strategic lighting is your friend. Look at darker areas. Here is where to place situational lighting which can be used whenever necessary.

Overhead lighting should be planned for as well. Spotlights, for example, will need to be installed during your renovation process rather than added at the end like lamps or pendant fixtures.

Trends vs classic designs

The design of your space is often the last step of a renovation project. If you are living in the home you will need to find a design scheme that you love.

Classic designs are just that, classic. There is a reason that many people opt for minimalist schemes, for example. Clean lines, neutral colours and a focus on natural materials may be a dream for some designers.

On the other hand, you may want to look at interior design trends and base your home around them. Stripes are one trend that is taking 2024 by storm  and the bigger the better. The only downside to following the trends is that you may find your décor is outdated quickly and need to change it.
