Your skincare routine is undoubtedly one of the most important aspects of maintaining healthy and glowing skin. Yet, even those of us with the best complexions can tend to get it wrong once in a while.

There are certain mistakes you can make that you may not even realize you’re making. Whether you’re just getting started with your skincare routine, or you’re seasoned enthusiast over the age of 70, here are some major mistakes that can make a world difference if you avoid them.

Not Wearing Sunscreen

The sun, although it’s necessary for our health, can be a very bad thing for our health and careful harmful UV rays can cause significant damage, resulting in premature aging sunburn, and in the worst-case scenario— skin cancer.

Although many people are under the impression that they only need sunblock on sunny days, little do they know that harmful UV rays can penetrate through clouds and even windows, making sunscreen regardless of the weather. Always use sunscreen with at least SPF 30, and apply every two hours if you’re directly in sunlight.

Exfoliating Too Much

Exfoliation is important for removing old dead skin, however, doing it too much can strip your skin of its natural oils and ultimately lead to redness and dryness. Don’t make the mistake of believing that more exfoliation equals smoother skin.

It’s all about moderation, so limit your exfoliation to one to two times per week, and ideally, use an exfoliator that comes in liquid format so that it’s not abrasive and doesn’t cut your skin.

Not Washing Your Face at Night

Sleeping with makeup on is one of the worst things you can do for your complexion.  Not only can it give you zits because it clogs your pores, but it can also cause premature aging. Always remove your makeup thoroughly before bed by using a gentle cleanser followed by toner or micellar water, and always follow with your nightly hydrating routine.

Remember, the moisturizer that you use at night should be considerably thicker than the one you use during the day under your makeup. That way your skin can soak up all of the hydration at night while you sleep, making for a much more penetrating effect.

Failing to Drink Water

One of the most important things you need to do comma for your skin and for your body is to drink an adequate amount of water as this is incredibly important not only for your overall health but especially for the quality of your skin!

External hydration is important, however, internal hydration is just as important for making sure your body has the right amount of hydration from the inside out.
